Ask the Expert: Youth centre inclusion

One of our members was involved in an accident and has never recovered. His mum has asked if we would have him back at the youth centre. How do I ensure this goes smoothly?

It is key that the needs of the returning young person can be realistically met. For example, does he have mobility or communication needs, which require specialist, or even additional staff? These issues would be best discussed with his mother before sessions begin.

You also want the experience to be positive for the young man who may well have memories of his time with friends at the centre. In addition, you have to deal with the reaction and emotions of the other young people. Changes in his appearance and communication methods could be upsetting and confusing for them. It might be a good idea for you to visit him to help prepare the young people. You might also consider contacting the charity Headway and ask them for some advice on how to brief the young people.

Young people have an endless capacity for understanding and empathy and will no doubt respond to the situation with thoughtfulness and friendship and put all of this worrying into perspective.
