Ask the Expert: Troubled youth workers

One of our young volunteers has always had a vibrant personality and appearance. But she is now low in energy, uncommunicative and more than a bit scruffy. Should we talk to her about it as the other young people are beginning to be rude about her?

It can be alarming when you see someone change so much unless you can identify the causes. When young people appear to alter their behaviour so significantly there are usually fundamental emotive drivers, invariably around self-esteem. Stress and emotional wellbeing are key to mental health and it sounds like there have been some challenges for this young person.

Depression is often one issue that affects an individual’s self-awareness. It is important you address this with your volunteer. She might appreciate talking about whatever it is that is causing her stress or upset and may not be aware of the changes. Be sure to equip yourself with referral information and be aware of local resources available so that you can ensure they are supported in the most appropriate way.
