We need a national strategy to uphold children’s rights

In May, Children England published the Vision for a ChildFair State, the culmination of four years’ work with a group of young people to define the central pillars of support that should be available to every child in every community.
Derren Hayes: 'There are dozens of examples of good local practice across the country but what is really needed now is a national strategy'

It is an achievement that Children England is rightly proud of as it prepares to close (see Your Shout).

The vision sets out the services, facilities and opportunities that young citizens should be able to access to have a good start to life and give them the best chance to become happy, healthy and successful adults.

The vision is steeped in rights-based language – from the right to never be homeless to the right to person-centred employment advice – and as such provides a practical and powerful tool for children’s services practitioners and policymakers to assess how well their local area is meeting children’s needs and ambitions.
