Frances Done has been appointed chair of the Youth Justice Board by Children's Secretary Ed Balls and Justice Secretary Jack Straw.
A former managing director at the Audit Commission financial watchdog, Done will take over from interim chair Graham Robb on 1 February.
Her career has spanned both public and private sectors including a three year stint as managing director for local government at the commission, where she had responsibility for audit and inspection work in relation to local government and the fire service in England.
She said: "The board plays a crucial role in working with partners to protect both the public and the interests of children and young people. I look forward to collaborating with all those who can help to build safer communities and ensure that young people do not end up in the criminal justice system."
The post of chair at the YJB has been up for grabs for a year, after Rod Morgan left in January 2007.
