Youth charities are being invited to bid for a share of a 20,000 grant to organise activities to "encourage and inspire" young black people.

The Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG) is offering grants of £500 to 40 local community and voluntary groups through its Reach Community Engagement Fund.

BTEG will be making members of its black role model programme available to take part in activities, which could involve events such as workshops or career advice sessions.

Reach project manager Delia Modeste said: "This is not open to the public sector, just those that are in the voluntary and charity sector. It is up to each organisation what event they run; the more imaginative the better. All we ask is that they tap into the expertise of one of our 47 black role models who volunteer with us to inspire young people."

Neville Bryce, a former Royal Navy lieutenant commander and a Reach role model, added: "Many of our boys and young men want to meet and listen to successful black men and this project provides those opportunities."

The deadline for applications is 10 September.
