
Poor wages, lack of career paths and workplace stress are leading to the exodus from the public sector towards retail, according to the public services union.
It called for professions such as teaching assistants and special needs assistants “to be better valued and recognised for their contribution to wider society”.
It said that “more structured career paths” would improve retention of staff, save schools and other public services recruitment and training costs through eliminating high staff turnover.
The union’s call follows comments made by Unison general secretary Christina McAnea, who was speaking on House of Commons podcast Committee Corridor this week.
