Sharp drop in child asylum applications

The number of asylum applications from unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) has fallen by 20 per cent over the last year.

Latest government figures for the year ending June 2018 show that there were 2,424 asylum applications, a 20 per cent decrease compared with the previous year.

Half of all applications come from just four countries, with Sudan and Eritrean nationals accounting for almost a third (30 per cent) of all UASC applications.

Vietnamese children made up 11 per cent of applications, while 10 per cent were Albanians.

There was a drop of 31 per cent among Albanian children over the 12 months to June 2018 compared with the previous year.

However, over the same period there was an increase of 13 per cent in applications from Sudanese children.
