
Led by Alice Barnard, chief executive of education organisation the Edge Foundation, the letter calls for a long-term education strategy that “brings together education at all levels” and “tackles educational inequalities”.
Barnard said: “We currently have an outdated education model, driven by a high-stakes accountability and assessment system. Our teachers are exhausted and our learners are not developing the transferable skills that employers are looking for. As a result, the UK continues to face growing skills shortages.”
Among the key recommendations for system reform include the move away from “prioritising a knowledge-heaving curriculum and assessment system”, toward providing students with “essential, transferable skills” such as creativity, problem-solving and team-work, with links to employers and “real-world” events.
