York's safeguarding children board has attempted to allay parents' fears after six women were arrested in connection with a joint police, Ofsted and children's services investigation into the welfare of children at two private nurseries in the city.
The investigations into the Heworth House and Little Joe's nurseries do not involve allegations of sexual abuse and the nurseries have remained open while investigations are ongoing.
But parents have voiced concern about the lack of information available to them on the nature of the inquiry.
In response to the concerns, Joe Cocker, manager of the City of York Safeguarding Children Board, said: "As a parent, I do appreciate the anxieties parents with children at the nurseries have. However, with my professional background I am also aware of the considerable risks to compromising a sensitive investigation that could result from placing too much information in the public arena."
He gave assurances that the nurseries are being closely monitored as part of the inquiry and said temporary recommendations had already been implemented by the nurseries’ management.
"We are very aware that the ongoing investigation and the high level of public interest are placing a strain both on parents and on those working in the nurseries," Cocker added. "We are working closely with their management to provide support and guidance, and to find ways forward as soon as possible."
