The children's services adviser for the Government Office for London (GOL) is to take over as director for children's services at Harrow council.

Catherine Doran will take up the role at the beginning of March when she will begin a one-month handover period with Paul Clark who has been in the position since 2003.

Seconded to GOL in 2007, Doran has been supporting seven east London boroughs with their work on children's welfare and has been the strategic lead on youth crime prevention for the capital.

Michael Lockwood, chief executive of Harrow Council, said: "Catherine brings a great deal of London-wide experience and will significantly strengthen our senior management team."

A trained social worker, Doran also spent seven years as assistant director for children, schools and families at Camden Council before taking up her advisory post.

She said: "I have enjoyed and learnt so much during my time on secondment to government, but my heart is in community services. I have been really impressed with Harrow's work and am looking forward to joining what will be an exciting new environment."
