Pupils rewarded for attendance

Friday, July 4, 2008

More than 10,000 Newcastle students who achieved between 98 and 100 per cent attendance at school last term are to be rewarded by the city council.

The young people, 7,000 of whom attended every single lesson, will be honored at presentation ceremonies in all the city’s schools.

Each student will receive a certificate to mark their achievement designed by Jack Turnbull, a year eight student from Walker Technology College, who fought off competition from budding young artists to create the design.

Gill Sanders, attendance initiatives development officer at Newcastle City Council, said: “There is a direct link between attendance and attainment and children and young people with good attendance records will have the best chance of future success”.
