A senior government adviser has been appointed as Ofsted's manager for social care development.

Jacky Tiotto, a senior civil servant with the Department for Education and former adviser with the Improvement and Development Agency, will take up the post at the inspectorate on 1 September.

She will support the national director for inspection development and strategy John Goldup, with the aim of improving Ofsted’s inspection of children’s social care.

Goldup said: "Jacky is joining Ofsted at a crucial time as we consult on the future shape of the inspection of local authority children’s services. Her wealth of experience in social care, particularly her work in child protection, will be an invaluable asset as Ofsted improves and develops its inspection frameworks."

Tiotto also headed up the body set up to challenge and support children's trusts on safeguarding performance – the National Safeguarding Delivery Unit – before it was disbanded last year after the coalition came to power.

She was a professional adviser to Lord Laming’s 2009 review of child protection in England under the former Department for Children Schools and Families.
