Breaking the cycle of intergenerational under-achievement, boosting educational performance, reducing teenage pregnancies and providing greater support for families are Nottingham's main priorities, according to the city's authorities.

The objectives are contained in Nottingham's local area agreement (LAA), which sets out key targets for the local council, police, health services, voluntary sector and businesses to work towards over the next three years.

In April, Nottingham became the UK's first Early Intervention City, with a raft of programmes designed to boost the life chances of its poorest children and stop them falling into crime.

Local MP Graham Allen said: "Our new LAA has a focus on early intervention in order to give us an important tool to help us achieve our ambition to break the intergenerational cycle of under-achievement in our city.

"Nottingham as a city is no longer content to repeat the failed remedies of the past, but is committed to intervening at the earliest possible opportunity to help our children make the most of their own potential and, in due course, that of their own children."
