Newcastle City Council is continuing with plans for a 5m Myplace centre in the city's listed 1920s baths, despite opposition from swimmers.
The council is applying for planning permission to convert the former St Thomas School, and one of the baths’ pools, into a facility with a performance area and recording centre.
A petition of 1,200 names was collected opposing the development, with objections raised over its potential impact on a listed structure, its effect on the value of nearby homes and the suitability of the location.
The Myplace@VineLane development is one of six planned for the north east of England.
