New play area for Sussex school

The community project, which transformed sixty square metres of overgrown land behind Rodmell Church of England primary school, came about after the council and the energy company formed a partnership with their major contractors.

Initially the partnership was intended to help improve road works across the county, but the group decided they wanted to work on community projects too.

The team of volunteers cleared shrubs and trees from the land behind the school, and moved 22 tonnes of material off the site, which was previously too dangerous for children.

Head teacher of the school, Julie Claxton, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to create a safe outdoors learning environment. It will give the children an all year round play area and includes a sensory area.”
