Nearly 1,000 looked-after children went missing from care placements last year.
Government figures show that 950 children in care went missing from their agreed placements in 2007, compared with 890 in 2006 and 860 in 2005.
The rise is mainly due to increases in London and the South West.
Earlier this week, the Department for Children, Schools and Families published proposals to improve support for looked-after children.

Junior children's minister Kevin Brennan said: "I want these children to be cared about, not just cared for."
