Chief executive of children's charity Barnardo's Martin Narey has announced he is to step down from the role next year.

During his five-year tenure at the head of the organisation, Narey has courted controversy by stating that children in the UK are not  taken into care early enough and more children should be brought into the care system from birth.

Announcing that he will step down as chief executive in January 2011 Narey said: "My decision to leave in what will be my sixth year has not been taken lightly. But before my departure I am determined to steer Barnardo's through what will be a challenging 2010.

"I want to ensure our work with children continues to grow in size and effectiveness and that we continue to speak out in defence of the most disadvantaged."

Barnardo's has announced it is to begin the process of recruiting a successor to Narey with immediate affect.

Chair of Barnardo's Council Geoffrey Barnett said: "We shall be very sad to say goodbye to Martin. He is an inspirational leader who works tirelessly to help children overcome disadvantage.

"Under his leadership Barnardo's is going from strength to strength. It is more effective, more influential and always puts belief in children at its heart."
