Key findings from the latest ONS data on impact of Covid-19

Sector leaders have warned that new figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) could indicate a new “child poverty and mental health emergency” in the UK.

The personal and economic wellbeing in the UK bulletin shows that anxiety has doubled since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and millions of families have seen a drop in income.

Here are three key points raised by the new report:

Sharp rise in people suffering with anxiety

The ONS figures show that around 25 million people aged 16 and over reported suffering high levels of anxiety between 20-30 March, when lockdown measures were introduced.

This equates to nearly half of all people aged over 16 in the UK (49.6 per cent) and is more than double the number of people reporting high levels of anxiety at the end of 2019 (21 per cent).
