An immigration detainee has died in hospital a week after being found hanging in his cell at a young offender institution (YOI).

Riliwanu Balogan, 21, was found in his cell at Glen Parva YOI, which holds immigration detainees as well as young offenders, on Sunday 8 May. He was taken to hospital but died yesterday (16 May).

His death follows calls for an independent review of the use of custody for children and young adults after CYP Now revealed five teenagers died in apparent suicides in the space of just five weeks earlier this year.

The use of detention for children in immigration cases has been ended by the coalition government but continues for over-18s.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "At 11am on Sunday 8 May HMYOI Glen Parva inmate Riliwanu Balogan was found with a ligature around his neck. Staff immediately attempted resuscitation and paramedics were called. He was taken to an outside hospital but was pronounced dead at 4.15pm on Monday 16 May.

"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
