The government has allocated grants totalling over three million pounds to local authorities to deliver cycle training.

The money will be spent by March 2009 and will allow nearly 80,000 children to learn about safer cycling.

It supports a cycle training standard, Bikeability, which is being led by Cycling England.

The government is keen to promote cycling to improve health, and reduce problems caused by traffic. The £3m comes from a £140m package that was announced in January.

Health minister Rosie Winterton said: "Considering obesity now affects around one quarter of adults and one in 10 children, encouraging people to take exercise has never been more important."
