The review had been backed by a petition signed by more than 100,000 people and set up by Joeli Brearley, founder of motherhood charity Pregnant Then Screwed.

But the Department for Education says in its response that it is “not currently planning a review of the childcare system” adding that “support is available to help with childcare costs, and the government monitors the sustainability of childcare providers”.

Brearley’s petition says a review is needed due to the high cost of childcare places for families, that cost families on average £14,000 a year. This is “completely unaffordable for many families” and is forcing parents to quit their jobs or work fewer hours, adds the petition.
