The call comes as part of the LGA's submission to Chancellor Rishi Sunak ahead of his comprehensive spending review due to be published next month.

It urges Sunak to plough an additional £10.1bn per year in core funding for councils in England by 2023/24.

Of this, £5.3bn must be used to plug an existing funding gap and maintain current levels of service, the LGA says.

“This is just to maintain services at today’s level. This gap, which could double due to the uncertainty resulting from the continued impact of Covid-19, assumes annual two per cent council tax increases and inflation-linked growth in grants,” the submission states.
