Children's services commissioner quits at failing council

2 mins read Social Care
The commissioner appointed by the government to oversee the transfer of children's services in Northamptonshire to an independent trust is to leave the role.

The announcement of Malcolm Newsam's resignation comes two months after Northamptonshire County Council's children's services was rated "inadequate" by Ofsted for the second time in six years.

It also comes amid a local government overhaul in the county, which will replace the current two-tier structure involving eight councils and replace them with two unitary authorities, North Northamptonshire and West Northamptonshire, by April 2021.

Newsam was appointed to the role last year and successfully recommended to government that the county's children's services are turned over to an independent not-for-profit children's trust.

But the Department for Education has confirmed that Newsam is to resign, with a new commissioner appointed in due course.
