The Children's Inter-Agency Group, the strategic unit that brings together the children's sector, is preparing talks with the new coalition government about impending cuts in children and young people's services.

"We are actively engaged in working with the new coalition government on making the cuts as effective and as painless as possible," said Sir Paul Ennals, the vice-chair of the Children's Inter-Agency Group.

Talks within the next few weeks will focus on early intervention and joint planning of services, including schools and children's centres and on cutting back regulations, targets and inspections.

Ennals said it was important for the children's sector to engage constructively with government in order to ensure that cuts did not impact on the most essential and effective services.
