The leading British artificial intelligence company will fund four students who wish to pursue a master’s degree in computer science at the university, after the success of its last scholarship programme.

The scholarship programme aims to help close the diversity gap in the field. It will be open to UK residents who identify as female, are from black or minority ethnic backgrounds, or are from a low participation area of the UK.

Mizu Nishikawa-Toomey, a past benefiter of the scholarship programme who studied Computer Science at Oxford, said it was a “motivator” during her time at university.

She said: “It made me feel like I was within grasp of something really great, and that I just had to reach a little further to get it.”

One of the scholarships will be available to an overseas student who identifies as female and is from a region deemed to be underrepresented in the field of computer science.

A new scholarship will also be funded one student taking:

  • DPhil in Engineering Science

  • DPhil in Computer Science

  • Autonomous Intelligent Machines and Systems EPSRC Centre of Doctoral Training (CDT)

Professor Michael Wooldridge, head of computer science at Oxford University, said: “We seek to deliver the best possible education to the best students, irrespective of their origin or background.

“This continuing support from DeepMind is a tremendous boost for us in this mission.”
