Gail Tolley, who joined the north-west London local authority in 2014, began her career, which she says was dedicated to "supporting children and young people and empowering them to succeed", in teaching.
She worked as a secondary school head teacher before moving into local government in 2004 with senior roles at Camden Council and Milton Keynes Council, where she was director of children's services.
Tolley, who is also the chair of the ADCS Educational Achievement Policy Committee, will leave Brent in the autumn.
Under Tolley’s leadership, Brent’s children’s services were judged “good” by Ofsted with outstanding features for the first time ever in 2018.
