The two organisations began talks about a possible merger last October and have now confirmed that, following due diligence, the move will go ahead.

During the next year, Ambition will explore how current functions and focus of Chyps, the membership organisation that supports and represents local authority services for young people, can be integrated within Ambition’s strategic and business plans.

Helen Marshall, chief executive of Ambition, said: “The need for a coherent national voice to safeguard and strengthen services for young people has never been greater.

“We’re confident this exciting move will harness new opportunities for those working with young people in our networks and encourage greater collaboration between local authorities and the voluntary sector.”

As part of the move, Chyps chief executive David Wright will join the Ambition staff team.

The transition will be overseen by a new business continuity group of the Ambition board, of which the current chair and chair designate of Chyps, Carole Aspden and Tim Eyres, will become members.

Aspden said due to challenging conditions local authorities are looking creatively at the way they commission, manage and deliver young people’s services and secure the local youth offer.

“We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead to make best use of our collective expertise and passion for services for young people,” she added.

The decision to merge hasn't been without opposition.

Last year a senior member of Chyps stood down from a role at the organisation after learning of the merger plans.
