Play Therapy with Abused Children (Second Edition)Ann CattanachJessica Kingsley PublishersISBN 978184310587918.99192 pages

This second edition of Cattanachs's classic text with updated stories and photos has brought the feel of the book into context with current times.

This edition includes significant reworking of the first few chapters to include changes and revisions in UK policies regarding the rights of children, referring both to English and Scottish legislation and guidance.

While the book also contains updates on the impact of trauma and the transition from victim to abuser, these topics are only briefly mentioned.

Cattanachs's style exudes warmth and compassion and has enabled the text to retain its human perspective, but the addition of a subject index makes it far more accessible for those new to this field.

She keeps the child firmly in the centre of her writing, striking a balance between sharing the horror of child harm to support the learning of others while avoiding unnecessary voyeurism.

The text continues to cover a broad range of topics, from the history and cultural context of play, through to consideration of the fundamentals of play therapy before using case examples to probe different types of child harm within a clinical context.

To gain an understanding of the impact of harm on a child and the use of play therapy to aid the child in seeking resolution, this book remains a key introductory text to the field.
