Children’s services professionals across the country are providing support to Afghan children and young people, many of whom have lived in the UK for many years. As the situation in Afghanistan has changed and deteriorated over the course of 2021, many children and young people currently or previously supported by children’s services will need additional help and support, no matter what their current status in the UK.
Through the Afghan Citizens’ Resettlement Scheme (ACRS), the UK government has announced it intends to resettle around 5,000 Afghan nationals at risk in 2021, and up to 20,000 in the longer term. Priority will be given to women and girls, and religious and other minorities. However, many details of the ACRS are still to be decided and the scheme is not yet in operation. Although we can expect that some unaccompanied children will be resettled in the UK under this scheme in the coming years, there are many Afghan children and young people already in the UK, whether they arrived recently or not, who have acute and evolving support needs.
