
More frequent inspections of secure training centres (STCs) were introduced earlier this year amid concerns about safety and the quality of care.
STCs are used to detain children aged 12 to 17 who have been sentenced to custody following conviction for a criminal offence.
These are among the most vulnerable young people in society yet fears for their welfare and safety have led to the closure of some settings (see below).
In April, new annual assurance inspections were introduced as part of efforts to raise standards.
The assurance visits are in addition to full annual inspections carried out by Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission and HM Inspectorate of Prisons.
