ACTION

Amberleigh Care, a specialist therapeutic provider that works with boys displaying harmful sexual behaviour, has delivered improved outcomes while challenging conventional thinking about the effectiveness of larger group settings.

Set up in 2005, the company offers two settings in Shropshire and Wales for boys aged 11 to 18, both of which are registered as formal therapeutic communities. Most boys stay for between two and three years, but the longest placement has been six years.

Both therapeutic communities deliver a structured, relational way of working in groups, within a psychologically informed environment. They comprise a larger than usual residential children’s home together with a separately registered school on site. The boys and staff are supported by an in-house clinical team of therapists and psychologists.
