SUMMARY

The survey included questions about attitudes to relationships and sex education (RSE) and sexual risk taking. At the time of the survey, RSE was not compulsory in schools but since September 2021 all schools in England are required to follow a compulsory curriculum.

The research found the majority of young people learned about sexual matters from lessons at school (84 per cent), friends (71 per cent) and the internet (54 per cent) with less than half citing parents (45 per cent). However, 24 per cent of gay, lesbian and bisexual young people said they did not learn about sexual matters from school or family members compared with nine per cent of heterosexual young people.
