SUMMARY

Independent Child Trafficking Advocates (ICTAs) provide specialist independent support for trafficked children and advocate on behalf of the child. In January 2017 an ICTA service was introduced in three early adopter areas: Greater Manchester, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, and throughout Wales.

The researchers wanted to find out how the ICTA service was implemented in the early adopter sites. Data was collected from service provider Barnardo's and from local authorities.

A total of 215 referrals were made to the service within the first year, which meant two extra ICTAs had to be recruited to support the existing six. The ICTA service is for children under 18. More than half - 56 per cent - of children referred to the service were aged 16 or 17. The majority - 58 per cent - were male.
