NYA Update: Youth in Action gives young people and workers a chance

1 min read
The NYA is working with a European Union programme that gives both youth workers and young people a range of exciting opportunities.

Youth in Action (2007-2013) is a rewarding and inspiring European Union initiative for young people aged 13 to 30. Latest figures show that 20,000 UK young people have benefited from this fund since 2007. Youth in Action covers a whole series of activities, from youth exchanges and long-term volunteering, through to training and networking. The British Council administers Youth in Action in the UK.

Adam Williams, the NYA's assistant development officer, said: "Global youth work is good youth work practice. It is an approach that starts from young people's everyday experiences, and engages them in critical analysis of local and global influences on their lives and their communities.

"A European youth programme can be an influential experience. It can provoke questions and thoughts, and can even change the course of a life. Young people who receive powerful impulses during an international event will need further support upon arrival at home in order to continue on the path.

"Taking part in a Youth in Action project is something a young person will never forget. Effective global youth work provides further opportunities to educate and empower young people, providing cultural awareness and solidarity across Europe."

Youth in Action also provides training and networking for youth workers. It allows people active in youth work to exchange experiences, expertise and good practice - a potentially valuable step in career development. Many projects are supported, including job shadowing, study visits and networking.
