
Cuts to local authority youth services and the resulting redundancies have been well documented nationwide.
But little is known about the fate of professionals who are redeployed in other council departments as a result of spending reductions.
However, a report by the National Youth Agency points to an emerging trend of qualified youth workers taking on more social care-related work.
The report – Youth Services in England: Changes and Trends in the Provision of Services – was based on information provided by the heads of regional youth work units.
It claims that some authorities are redeploying professionals to support social care functions, such as the Troubled Families programme, in a bid to retain their skills when finances are strained.
