Youth should be seen and heard

Youth Work
Young people should be encouraged to get involved in influencing issues that affect them, a report to be launched next week will reveal.

The Seen and Heard Report 2007, compiled by BT and the UK Youth Parliament, highlights the work of young people who were given Seen and Heard Awards. The awards recognise young people who have proactively sought to make a difference.

One example shows how members of the Isle of Wight Youth Council campaigned for cheaper bus fares for under 19s and secured a 50p flat rate to travel anywhere on the island. Andy Hamflett, chair of UK Youth Parliament, said: "Young people are rightly furious when money is spent on projects that are badly designed or don't take account of what's really needed in the area.
