Youth participation: Youth Parliament to recruit Travellers

1 min read

The organisation wants to attract two members from the Irish Traveller community for its 2006 elections and is working with the Action Group for Irish Youth to find candidates.

The announcement of the virtual constituency at the Parliament's annual Express Yourself event today (2 March) coincides with the launch of Citizen Traveller - a pilot project run across Greater London by the Action Group for Irish Youth to find ways of encouraging participation among young Travellers.

The project will work with statutory and voluntary organisations to examine what structures are in place to give a voice to the Traveller community.

The Irish Traveller Movement in Britain estimates that there are 100,000 Irish Travellers in the UK, roughly half of whom are under 25, according to the Action Group for Irish Youth.
