
Data collected by the Youth Justice Board (YJB), shows there were 50,000 children arrested in the year to March 2021 and there were 8,800 first-time entrants to the youth justice system, both figures were down a fifth on the year before. Nearly 16,000 children received a caution or sentence, 17 per cent fewer than the year before.
Annual data published by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) and YJB shows that the number of proven offences by children in England and Wales in 2021 was just over 38,500, a 22 per cent decline on 2020 levels. There has been a dramatic 78 per cent decline on the 170,000 offences recorded in 2011 (see graphics).
