Youth Justice: Youth offending teams worried about performance target clash

Some local authorities are giving youth offending teams targets to reduce the number of young people that come before the courts for the first time.

But many police forces are expected to increase the number of young people they prosecute.

At Young People Now's Youth Justice Summit, Peter Kay, manager of Thurrock Youth Offending Team, said: "We are not going to be able to meet this target without the co-operation of the police."

Kay said the target has been introduced as part of the Thurrock team's Annual Performance Assessment, which had been altered to fit in with the introduction of joint area reviews for children's services.
