Youth Justice: Young adults break the most curfews

The Electronic Monitoring of Adult Offenders study found significant variation between different parts of the secure estate in the number of prisoners recalled for breach of a Home Detention Curfew Order, which requires them to stay at home from 7pm to 7am. Young offender institutions were among those with the highest recall rates.

Aileen Murphie, a director at the audit office, said a number of factors could be to blame. She said family circumstances are sometimes poor, and young people's lifestyle could also be an issue. "A curfew is much more of a punishment if you are used to going out a lot," she said.
