Youth Justice News: Youth Custody - Probation changes fail youngadults

The National Offender Management Service wants probation services to double the amount of work they contract out each year for the next two years. The Home Office plans to legislate to back this up in 2008.

The voluntary sector welcomed the announcement, but was concerned about the absence of references to young adults. Earlier this year, the Home Office removed the distinction between adult and young offenders.

Will Higham, head of policy at the Prison Reform Trust, said: "There is nothing about the change for 18- to 21-year-olds. It is a huge change, and no-one seems to be talking about it."
