In the 12 months to March this year, a total of 844 children under the age of 18 were remanded in custody in the UK for seven days or less (CYP Now, 7-13 May).
The prevailing concern is that the figure is too high, with reductions in the number of youth courts sitting being held up as a possible factor for the number of remands.
This can mean that children appear before adult courts, leading to a risk of them being remanded until the next youth court sits.
Campaigners argue that even a short period in custody can be a hugely traumatic experience for a young person and say that a number of steps can be taken to address the situation.
