Youth Justice: Board wanted more inclusion schemes

The Home Office rejected the request and instead agreed to increase the number of YIPs by half by 2008, bringing the total to 108 (YPN, 21-27 July, p2).

Roger Howard, chief executive of Crime Concern, told the Home Affairs Select Committee last week that the board wanted to establish more of the schemes, which aim to engage the 50 most at-risk teenagers aged 13 to 16 in each area.

He later told Young People Now: "I was aware that the board had asked for more than it had been given. There was much fanfare from the Government about an increase in YIPs, but it is hands and toes counting."
