Figures issued by the board last week revealed wide variations in the likelihood of young offenders receiving a custodial sentence across England and Wales. The percentage of young offenders punished by prison ranged from as low as one per cent in Solihull to as high as 28 per cent in Luton.
The Youth Justice Board is working with 10 youth offending teams to formulate new approaches to curbing custodial sentences for young criminals. The work should be completed in December before being adopted nationwide.
