Youth Custody: Sector giants urge action to end crisis

There are currently 3,322 juveniles in custody, with just 48 empty beds available. The trio were due to visit Feltham Young Offender Institution on Tuesday to launch a call to action.

Morgan told Young People Now it was important for ministers to reiterate their support for the proposition that placing young people in custody should be a last resort. He said the Home Office's "offences brought to justice" targets should be amended to promote preventive measures, not just conviction rates. And he pointed out that many magistrates tell him young people are being brought before them who could have been dealt with pre-court.
