Youth custody: MP urges 'deplorable' changes to restraint law to bescrapped

1 min read

Sally Keeble, MP for Northampton North, will use a parliamentary debate tomorrow (12 July) to call for the changes to be withdrawn.

The legislation alters how restraint in STCs can be used. Previously it could only be used to prevent escapes, assaults or damage to property, but it can now be used to ensure "good order and discipline".

Keeble said: "There needs to be a basic review of the type of restraint used and the way in which it's used because it's overdue. The changes are deplorable. Only the Youth Justice Board and directors of STCs were consulted on it and there are only four STCs so it's not a very wide consultation. I would have expected them to consult other interested groups."
