Young travellers: Exclusion causes education issues

Of the 3,000 young people registered for elective home education, up to 35 per cent of them are estimated to be Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children. A third of these are "housed" Gypsies.

The survey of 23 authorities found that take-up of the scheme was higher at secondary school level, due in part to racist bullying and a need by the community to preserve their culture.
