Young people help shape services

Project

Young Commissioners

Purpose

To get young people actively involved in the commissioning of children’s services

Funding

About £400 a year, from Reading Borough Council’s youth participation budget

Background

Involving young people in commissioning services helps ensure those services meet their needs. Having seen it work elsewhere, Reading Council’s participation co-ordinator Tom Woolmer set up a group of young commissioners.

Action

In early 2011, a team of young commissioners was recruited from youth groups and schools. There are currently three aged 17 to 18, with capacity for up to six 13- to 19-year-olds in total. They meet fortnightly and work closely with the children’s commissioning team. They get involved at all stages, from drawing up specifications to overseeing the tendering process and giving feedback on services once they are up and running.
