The Howard League for Penal Reform set up the free telephone helpline in March 2004 to give children access to legal advice.
It also operates a helpline for practitioners, and in the 10 months to January 2005 the two lines received 264 calls on a range of issues, including solitary confinement, healthcare and bullying.
Howard League director Frances Crook said the Prison Service had agreed to publicise the number. A letter will now be sent to every prison, and the freephone number will be displayed above prison telephones. The helpline will also be publicised to parents and practitioners.
"These children are some of the most damaged and isolated in society," said Crook. "This helpline will improve their treatment in the penal system."
