Young offenders: Intensive scheme extended to a year

1 min read

Eleven youth offending teams are trialling a 12-month version of the Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programme (ISSP), a community-based punishment that normally lasts six months.

Thomas Sackville, manager of Nacro South East London ISSP, said: "A longer programme will allow us to tackle all the individual's key areas of need and offer prospects of success within the local community while reducing offending."

Home Office minister Paul Goggins said: "The new programme doubles the amount of time a young offender can spend on an ISSP, with more intensive intervention to address the causes of their offending and increased community supervision."

The 11 pilot areas are Birmingham and Solihull, Coventry, East London, Greater Manchester East, Kirklees and Calderdale, Leeds, Liverpool, North London, Nottingham, South East London and South Wales.
